US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated during a press conference on Thursday, Oct. 22, that the war in Ukraine is fundamentally about the Donbas – representing roughly 11 percent of the country that Russia cannot seize militarily and Ukraine legitimately refuses to cede for sovereignty and security reasons. Emphasizing that the conflict cannot be resolved militarily, Rubio asserted that an end to hostilities requires diplomatic compromise with both sides making concessions. Rubio noted that the Trump administration is prepared to act as a mediator to bring both parties to the table.
