Il y a 25 ans, onze personnes perdaient la vie dans l'incendie du tunnel routier du Gothard à la suite d'une collision entre deux camions. Il s'agissait alors du quatrième incendie mortel dans un tunnel alpin en deux ans et demi. Depuis lors, la sécurité y a été nettement renforcée.
