Al president Obama se li ha retret que ell no és afroamericà, tot i tenir el 50% de l'ADN heretat d’un pare africà i l’altre 50% heretat d’una mare amb arrels europees. De fet, hi ha afroamericans que tenen en el seu genoma menys percentatge d'ADN africà que ell, però socioculturalment es considera que només són afroamericans els descendents dels esclaus africans que van ser segrestats i traslladats a Amèrica com a treballadors forçats.
